Hit point madness!?!

When you are increasing a monsters level and are adding additional hit points do you multiply the new level into the hitpoints? Ex: increasing goblin skirm from level 1 to 2. 8+1+(8 or 16)?

Next question is on hitpoints for a solo monster. I'm making a golem who is going to be based off a level 4 soldier, con mod is +5. I don't understand the formula to making hitpoints for solos. Thank you in advance for the help!

DMG pg 185

2. Adjust Hit Points. A solo has hit points equal
to 8 times its level +1, plus its Constitution score. If the
solo is level 10 or lower, multiply that result by 4 for its
final hit points. If it is level 11 or higher, multiply that
result by 5 for its final hit points.

So for a lvl 4 solo with a constitution mod of 5 thats gonna be:

((lvl + 1) X 8) +Con score) X 4 = total hp
5 X 8 = 40 + 20 = 60 X 4 = 240

At least thats what I see from the DM tool box

DMG 174:

"Increasing or Decreasing
Level...

The monster also gains extra hit points at each
level, based on its role (see the “Monster
Statistics by Role” table on page 184)."

So assuming you are talking about the kobold skirmisher, Id take the original hp and add 8 hitpoints because when creating a skirmisher you use the formula on 184:
8 + con + (level X 8) = total hp

So if you raise the level by one it just increases the total hp by 8

Ah, I was making level up hit points much more complicated than it needed to be! Thank you for enlightening me :) Thank you for helping me understand the solo equation better as well! My only question is where did you get the + 20 for he con mod? Do you multiply the con mod by he level of the monster?

Yeah, I didn't explain that very well.

You said the monster had a 5 con modifier. That means the monster had to have a con score of either 20 or 21 (score = (mod X 2)+ 10)). Seeing as though 20 is already pretty high for a lvl 4 monster I simply assumed it wasnt 21.

I haven't read the MM2 yet but I saw on another thread where people mentioned they changed the rules for making solos and elites in it so you might want to check that out.

Yeah, if you follow the rules in the DMG you're going to have far too many hit points and a long slogfest. In general. I'm starting to think that good solo fights are more of an art form actually.

Well, I don't have MM2... So I guess it's a slugfest! I am going to have to battlefield work against the solo. Hopefully that will speed up the process.
