Regarding the village - if the stream of adventurers causes there to be problems between the villagers and the residents of the castle, the village could become a small fortification, resembling a 'humanoid' village more than a standard human one. ie: Mostly underground (maybe taking over and expanding on some old goblin or harpy caves?), with farmland around the village, and only the ruins of the old village on the surface. That way, when the :):):):) hits the fan, the villagers can retreat to the village, guard the one or two entrances, and hope for the best instead of having the village razed over and again. When there AREN'T adventurers about, they farm, when there are, they farm, trade, and so on, but generally don't farm the outermost fields or the ones too close to the castle (ie: so close that they won't have time to run back to the caves). This setup lends some more verisimilitude, makes the village somewhat "post apocalyptic" feeling, and keeps the villagers both edgy and not TOO hostile to adventurers.
