OH! I see... :D K. In the nation of Hinsua on Barsoom, there is a city named Luc'Davarionne. Otherwise known as The Flying City, although it doesn't actually fly. More like the Improbably Balanced City. Long, long ago, folks discovered an extremely queer thing at this location: A spiral that emerged from the ground, formed of some substance that was impervious to all attempts to break it, drill into it, dissolve it, everything. This "object" emerged from the ground like a broad sheet, at least two hundred yards across, and circled up into the air, steadily narrowing and curving in upon itself as it rose. Viewed from directly above it would resemble a vast spiral, the line of which grows narrower and narrower as the center is approached. Viewed from the side it forms an enormous cone, more than four miles across at its base, rising hundreds of yards above the ground. At the very peak of this spiral sits the Peacock Throne, from where Emperor Alauddin II surveys his fractious land. Around the Throne is built the Palace, which occupies only the very top few circles of the spiral. Descending from there is a strange city, of buildings draped over the substance of the spiral, rickety staircases extending from one loop up to the next, hanging tenements, cable cars and elevators. Since the spiral itself emerges from a high cliff, the city is actually suspended in mid-air far above the ocean. Hence, The Flying City. The city itself is ordered in "Loops", counted from the great gate at the base of the spiral. There are one hundred Loops before one enters the Palace itself, where the Loops become more decorative than architectural. Obviously a higher Loop address is preferable, although many prosperous businesses (especially those providing for travellers and merchants) are located on the first couple of Loops. People also speak of "upslope" and "downslope" by which they mean the direction of the spiral's incline. To be "upslope" is to be closer to the next Loop, walking around the spiral (although most of the time it's quicker to take one of the many bridges, ropeways and assorted contraptions up to the next Loop rather than walk all the way around). Howzat?
