Message: <blockquote data-quote="Zerovoid" data-source="post: 288280" data-attributes="member: 283">I think that you can definately use the sword with UMD.If being a Paladin isn't a feature of being a Paladin, I don't know what is.When I first read that passage when the PHB was released, using a Holy Avenger was the first thing that I thought of.  Using the Holy Avenger requires 1 level of Paladin, so if you get a 21 or more on your Emulate Class Feature check, then you can act as a 1st level Paladin for the purposes of using the sword.  Your class level for using the sword's dispel ability would be dependant on your UMD check.Also, in 2nd edition, Holy Sword use was actually a class feature of the Paladin that was mentioned in the class write up.  Although that is no longer the case, I think it is within the intent of the rules for a rogue to use one.Obviously, an additional UMD check is required unless you are also LG.Its pretty powerful, but a Holy Avenger is worth 120k, so its a sizable chunk of a character's wealth, whether they are "cheating" at using it or not.  And if you run out of adventure ideas, you can always have a group of paladin's go after the character, determined to give the sword to a more fitting wielder.  Also, note than an intelligent Holy Avenger would be much harder to fool.  I can even imagine a rogue trying so hard for so long to pretend to be LG that he actually undergoes a change.</blockquote>
