Honest PDF Page Counts?

So how many PDF companies count the front cover as part of the page count for their products? Is this a viable thing to do? It's not like you pick up a 32 page module and go, oh, it's actually 36 pages because of the front cover, back cover, and internal covers.

Or the Index or Table of Contents since they are not really content? If the cover is not content surely the index is also not content. Should we also report information about font sizes, margins and column widths and other information? How about the OGL page, should that not be included?

Actually, I haven't released a PDF with a cover yet, but I was planning to put the cover either at the end of the PDF or in a separate PDF just so the PDF with the real info in it has page numbers that line up correctly. Would that bother anyone?

just put the cover at the beginning as normal and then set it as a section that doesn’t use numbers...

then set a new section using the numbers at page one...

this will allow people to input numbers to jump to different page and to select the pages to print...

then when they want to print the cover they use A or I or whichever style you’ve used...

and covers should NEVER be used in the page count...number of pages is for interiors only...

I'm sure if I use Acrobat that would be easy. But since I don't, it isn't. In any case, I still don't see why anyone would want the cover as the first page. It makes the PDF slower to open if there's a big graphic on the front page. Opening straight to a title page or table of contents would be more user friendly I would think. You don't need to see the cover everytime you open the book do you? And if it prints out of order, you can always move the sheet to the right position. And first impressions on the first open are irrelavent. The purchaser already saw the cover when he clicked on it to pay for it.

Or am I crazy?

What might be more accurate for a PDF book on the inside front page would be Word Count and Illustartion Count. Pages is a moot point if some of the wording falls half page. and Begins another chapter skipping that half page.

I think that the only issue I might have with pdf page numbers is that if the page number in the table of contents does not match with the actual page number, the scroll bar is a blunt instrument and "goto page" is near useless. I sort of expect this from the medium, it isn't a book after all, but at the very least include a linked index so if I'm on the ball I can get to where I want to be quickly.
