HoS: Not-so Epic Destinies Preview

Aegeri

First Post
Wizards have posted another preview, this time of the EDs in the book with the Guardian of the Void being shown off. It's a really pretty poor ED - especially given the quality of recent EDs that have perfect mechanics and excellent fluff like Thief of Legend (which I highly recommend looking at for examples of just how to do that). The ED doesn't give the same kind of resurrection mechanics common to other EDs, only a single stat boost and to add insult to injury requires the mediocrity to be spread around the party to even provide a good benefit. The fluff of these EDs is nice though, but the terrible mechanics relegate it to obscurity.

I honestly have to say the more mechanical crunch I see of this book the more worried I get about it. It's been extremely underwhelming so far.

Interesting to see a new look at the process of death in 4E. Got some adventure/campaign ideas there.

The Guardian of the Void is lame, though. I'm kinda evil, but not evil enough to slaughter millions, and as a reward death itself will not claim me.

Ok, whatever.

I'm really baffled that they crammed the tribal/guild feat mechanic into an ED. And for benefits that require you to get your butt kicked to even matter.

Someone seriously overvalued regeneration 5, is my guess.

Really. How many of this ED are there in the world anyway? In my worlds it would be one. And one only. My worlds are not overrrun with Epic characters.

Well based on the ED they expect 2-6 of them to exist in your party.

While the idea of two EDs having some kind of special Wonder Twins Power Activate synergy isn't a bad one, the idea that two people have to have the same ED in the party to get the full benefit... and that benefit is a +1 to death saves and teleporting when you un-die...

I mean I guess if you want to have some kind of silliness involving an entire party of warforged that constantly hop back on their feet because they have like a +10 to death saves?

Sounds like it would be part of a story arc, with a party who are "the champions of death." It would likely have worked rather well, thematically, in the Death's Reach arc.

The thp aura is notbad at all. Especially when you have some of them in your party, one of you can always have it active and you can really take a lot of beating, as you can replenish your thp every round.
