How are you using Redhurst?

Knightfall

World of Kulan DM
I just bought Redhurst: Academy of Magic, by Human Head Studios, and I'm wondering how everyone is using the magical, traveling campus in their campaigns. I'm planning on using it with my World of Kulan homebrewed setting including Freeport, Khemit, Bluffside, Parma, Zakhara, and several homebrewed locations.

Cheers!

I have a player who is from the College of Wizardry (an old 2nd edition book updated partially in Tome & Blood) whose school has a rivlary of sorts with them. I'll be using more of the characters and details as the characters grow in power. The planar hopping effect means that as new settings come out like Dawnforge and Morningstar, I can have the players hop over there and back.

It's interesting you brought up Mathghamhna. I'm planning on having quite the rivalry between the Arcane Order and Redhurst. Specifically, I'm going to have Mathghamhna have Redhurst's number on the spellflag field.

My home brew world is a sci-fi/fantasy cross over. Basically, a research colony got shifted into a fantasy world.

Anyway, some of the people from the colony are going to college to learn magic. To better understand the world.

However, I'm not using Redhurst per se, but another college, from another product. Grim Thorpe College, from Unhallowed Halls. But since I incorporated both Freeport & the 7 cities from 7 Cities into my world, Redhurst also exists in it. But mostly as a rival school.

I am using a lot of the school info from Redhurst in running the goings on at Grim Thorpe. Class names and such.

I think Redhurst really needs a mailing list, to help people swap ideas and NPCs and such.

What do you think about Redhurst? I've heard good things, but really know very little about it. Can you give me a description?

It's a great book. Lots of detail (making it useful), but not too much (which might overwhelm). I haven't used it yet (no real need/reason), so I haven't read it since it came out.

If you come to the Chicago Gameday next month, I'll give you my copy.

I wasn't sure about it at first either, P'Cat. It felt too quirky to me as I read the blurbs on the Human Head Studio website. Even the preview didn't sell me.

It wasn't until I read several of the reviews linked at HHSs website that the book started to appeal to me. I wasn't sure about the red text notations in the margins (from a former, disgruntled student).

What did get me is the books unique premise of the school being able to travel from place to place. You can send it pretty much anywhere you want on your world and the school can be cloaked in illusion to either hide from the natives or blend in with the surrounding structures.

That way, it could exist in both Zakhara and, say, Eversink, Guant, or Oursk. You could build a rivalry between Dylrath's wizard school and Redhurst, or even have some yet unknown surviving members from the Academy of Flamecraft try to take over Redhurst from within to tip the balance of power on Spira.

All sorts of roleplaying goodness for you P'Cat.

Cheers!
