I've done about 5 of them:
The tavern meeting
The explore the Wizard's Tower (twice!)
Meet a wizened sage
Had to find/destroy a major artifact (a couple of times actually...)

I only needed 1 - hoard of disposable peons to slaughter. It's always fun, and some BBEG is always in the thick of it, usually with enough wits to trick the PCs several times before getting whacked.

BTW, I abhor the 'meeting in a bar' crap. I have never liked a DM that used it, and now it's a tell-tale sign of a DM that doesn't know how to pull a party together.

Wow... I've done none of those so far. Probably the closest I've come to a cliche entrance is where I had the BBEG hire the good guys to steal something, and get they stuck in the back for it. That was the first session.

Usually, though it's something more along the lines of somebody (me) gets sucked through mysterious portal to another plane and has to find a way home, or a group of strangers arrive back in town after an adventure to find it dead and deserted.

In my next campaign, a 20th level PC from a past campaign is going to be raised after being dead for 1000 years to battle a now-corrupt inter-planar government he helped create in the last campaign. Fun!

The best hats are the old hats. :)

I've done them all except the drow party, evil or otherwise. I have run an all-evil party in a mini-campaign, but I don't recall any of the PCs being drow.
