I'd LOVE to see a well formatted & indexed SRD to use in lieu of the oop WotC stuff-- most of which, I agree, seems ridiculously overpriced on the 2ndary market!. Even if someone were to publish just a cheap soft-cover with minimal/no art, I'd be happy. But I don't see it happening. What incentive is there for the publisher? There's still scads of 3.5e stuff out there, both hardcopies and online references. The 3.x "purist" target audience is likely shrinking, since 3.x is competing with the "living" systems of PF and 4e, as well as with the "rediscovered" OSR retro-clone systems. Not to mention that 3.x "purists" are actually split between 3.0e and 3.5e. 3.x is like cars from model year 2001: lots of them are still on the road; they're reliable but many have bad paint jobs; chicks aren't checking them out because they're not the sexy new thing; and it's nowhere near a classic yet. It's just kinda old and outdated. :(
