You can think what you like, but it is that simple, and if you've created content in Beyond, you know it is. As an internal user, all they have to do to separate out the 2014 items and spells is: A) Go through them and add (Legacy) to the end of the name. That's it. There are no other steps. Access to those spells/items is ALREADY tied to ownership of the 2014 PHB/DMG. No change needs to be made there. Maybe they've added some tech to add a "Legacy" badge to spells/items beyond that, but it'll just be a checkbox if so, and I honestly doubt it. With the 2024 spells/items, they just need to ensure access to them is tied to ownership of the 2024 PHB/DMG, not the 2014 versions therefore, and that's probably already the case. There was no hiccup, but I can tell you exactly why they were going to do this - a longstanding policy of what might unkindly called laziness, and what at best might be called "perfectionist miserliness". To be specific, Beyond (not WotC), have, for literally 4-5 years, had a policy where if they could do something internally, but it would require a bunch of data-entry and it wouldn't be "perfect", they just wouldn't do it, even though it was part of a paid product and would save players huge time/effort. They used the excuse that, in future, they could do it perfect and would then. They have used this excuse for years and the ability to do it perfectly has never emerged. Clearly they took their usual attitude, and that persisted until some higher-up saw the push-back, got the rest of them in a room, and said "How much effort would this actually be?!" and was told "Oh about X hours", at which the higher-up probably Picard face-palmed and told them to just do it.
