When you see the phrase "in shadows" applied to items, spells, or creatures, how dark must the shadows be?
A party of four characters with a torch casts a multitude of shadows just from themselves and within the light source area. Could these shadows be used?
A sparse forest will have shadows any time of the day. Does this suffice?
On a very bright day, a boulder may cast a faint shadow. Is this sufficient?
I think that all of answers resound with a YES! Since shadows, of any kind, tie the material plane to the shadow plane, the special abilities can be used.
What about in a dungeon with no light? Would absolute darkness count as a shadow for this purpose? I'm not so sure about this one, but would likely rule that it could be used.

Edit: The shadow mastiff special quality shadow blend says anything but full daylight. Perhaps this is the definition.
