Can't they be Arcane, Whimsical, and Threatening?

I voted for Arcane, but I also like the idea of making them frivolous and whimsical as well as Fey and threatening. For me, Elves are like the weather, mercurial, unpredictable, and powerful. They are ruled by their passions, not reason, and their affinity for magic only makes them more capable of working their will on the world. Generally, I think that Elves should have sorceror as their favored class rather than wizard, as their chaotic nature and reputation for beauty lends itself more to a higher charisma than intelligence, and because most creatures with a natural affinity with magic cast as sorcerors do. Let Humans, Dwarves, and Gnomes spend years in detailed study of ancient tomes...Elves browbeat and cajole the universe into bending to their whims, and woe to anyone who raises their ire.

Arrogant psychopaths (Discworld)

Arrogant? I wouldn't call it that. Completely egoistic? Megalomaniac? Genocidal? Yes! But Arrogant doesn't even begin to cover it.

Terry Pratchett made a great job making villains out of elves. Here's elves that don't need to know anything about war - they make others go to war for them.

Hunting, on the other side, is something they're good at. And if you're an elf on or around discworld, everything's pray for you.

Mine are dangerous, racist and somewhat rare. Heck we had a half elf that was raised by elves (Used the half elf option in the DMG...Wizard as favored class, no social skills bonus and the elven weapon bonus) and he also was in the elven Imperial Army at one time. EVERYONE that was not an elf thought he was some kind of elven officer. He was actually just a sergeant.

Elves are looked at as the long distant cousins to fey. Nonelves cannot enter their country with out a passport...if you do get one you can only go to a border town. No nonelf has ever seen the entire country. They are looked upon with mystery and awe. They at one time were at war with the humans but sided with them against the orcs in the Great War. Now they have an uneasy truce.
