D&D General How do you prefer your monster books?

What is your prefered type of monster book? Standard Monster Manual, where you get seemingly random assortment if creatures of all types? Collection of monsters of speciffic type? Or threats you can encounter in speciffic setting, be it whole world or location? Some mix of the two?

Also, which is your favorite monster book, regardless of editions, 3rd party included?

Mine isn't on there!!! I like setting specific and general monster books. Not a huge fan of monster specific.

My favorite monster book isn't really a book. It was the 2e Monstrous Compendium binder(s).

Setting sprciffic is general by default, I thought only setting and monster speciffic needs extra option.

I want a book organised by Terrain and focussed on encounter design instead of Stat blocks - is that setting specific or mixed?

That sounds interesting, is there a book like that? Sandstorm and Frostwalk in 3.5 come to mind but they also had player options and other stuff, right?

General and Type Specific. I still own a copy of the 3.5 Draconomicon as well as all 6 of PF1's Bestiaries.

I generally just pick up hyper-specific monster books (Latin American Monsters, Monsters of the City, Monsters of the Underworld, etc.).

That said, my favorite monster book of all time -- maybe my favorite RPG book of all time -- is the brilliant general OSR monster book The Monster Overhaul.

It had the basic MM monsters as well. There were the base monsters, and then by setting. So you hade MC 1-2, which were the base monsters. Then MC 3 was Forgotten Realms. MC 11 was also Forgotten Realms. Some settings had multiple releases.
