How do you resurrect an outdier (half-fiend)?

Is wish the only way? Does a half fiend go back to his home plane when "killed"? If so, can he be gated back? Anyone know details on this issue?

Even an outsider cam have the prime material plane as him home plane. There is a spell in the Manual of the planes that raises outsiders. Other than that, I would say a wish would do it.

The spell mentioned is "Revive Outsider" which is a 6th level clerical spell in MoTP. Other than this and Wish, Miracle would work as well.

In response to your other questions:

1) Creatures only return to their home plane when killed if they are summoned. The best examples of this include the Summon Monster spells or the abilities that some Fiends and Celestials have to summon allies.

2) In all other cases, the Outsider is killed and his body remains on the plane upon which he was slain. This includes calling spells like Gate, the Planar Ally chain (divine), Planar Binding chain (arcane), and Plane Shift. In most cases, if an Outisder is encountered on a non-native plane you can probably assume he was called unless it is stated otherwised.

3) Some creatures are considered native outsiders of the Prime (e.g. tieflings, assimars, genasi, high-level monks, various PrC's). In these cases they may be raised normally.

Some outsiders are native to the prime material plane... ie. the Aasimars and Tieflings. So, therefore, they can be raised as normal.

So a half-fiend outsider that has hell as his home plane would not return to that on his death in the prime material?

If he was summoned then he would return.

If he was called or plane shifted to the Prime, then he dies there.

The details of what happens to someone after they die are campaign specific.

In the default D&D cosmology (as detailed in the Manual of the Planes), outsiders "...tend to meld with their native planes". A wish or miracle can revive them, as can the revive outsider spell (Clr 6) presented in the MotP.

It's also worth noting that certain outsiders born on the Prime Material plane, such as Aasimar or Tieflings, or 20th level monks, are considered "native outsiders", and are exempt from the restriction on being raised. If the half-fiend in question was born on the Prime Material Plane, he might be considered a native outsider as well.

(Edit: Wow, I need to post faster!)

Technically, even a pit fiend isn't actually banished back to Hell if slain on another plane; or rather, he goes back to Hell, but he's not gonna be a pit fiend anymore once he gets there.

The soul of a slain evil outsider is dispatched to the appropriate plane and becomes a petitioner or the equivalent of one on that plane.

If someone holyworded your half-fiend, he'd be launched back to hell in one piece; otherwise, he's dead as a doornail, and it'll take either the Revive Outsider spell or a rather substantial XP hit to salvage him from his nice, new, pain-wracked Lemure form.

That would depend on how religion and faith works in your campaign... the soul of the creature could go to his deity for judgement etc.

But I think you'd need a wish to bring back someone like that... assuming of course that the creature really dies while on the prime Material Plane... it could be that he is just sent back to his home plane (banished).

Nah.. I use the rule from planescape 2 Ed.. Makes most sense.

-If you have a natural lifespan (Can die from old age) you can be resurrected.... No matter what plane the caster of the resurrectionspell is on.

The new version was made at a time when the plan was not to add planescape to 3 Ed. (To simplify things). Later in Forgotten Realms they added that twist with the home plane because they use planetouched as regular PC's.

Mortal bodies are (From 2 Ed.) just vessels for souls that allows the souls to be free of planar commitments and free from planar influences.

Immortals (Petitioners (Souls) and other outsiders) reform in their native plane if destroyed.
