How do you start/stop Kneeling and Sitting?

It has rules in the PHB for the effects of sitting and kneeling, but it doesn't say anything about how a character gets to that position, or gets out of that position, AFAICT.

Any help? I went ahead and threw a quick ruling on it when it came up in game, but I'd like to know if there's any real rules on it.

For laughs, I sent custserv my very first email! jgsugden's pep talk in his sig finally got to me :D I'll be sure to post what they say, if anything. For now, I houseruled it to be kinda like drawing a weapon, since it's something that takes time, but shouldn't take a much as standing up from prone.

Sitting and Kneeling
Standing up from sitting or kneeling is a move-action that doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity. If you have a base attack bonus of at least +1, you can stand up from sitting or kneeling as a free action when you combine it with a regular move.

Making it a free action is rather powerful. For instance, let's say a sorcerer is crouching behind a low wall, giving him full cover. He could stand up, cast a maximized magic missile, and then crouch down again, all without exposing himself between rounds. On the other hand, if he were hiding behind the edge of a wall or a doorway, he'd only have half cover when casting.

Your Trip Monkeys will also want to know your rule for taking up a kneeling position from a prone position.

Grar, that makes my head hurt. One on the one side, I thankfully lack Trip Monkeys. On the other, that's no reason to ignore the situation. Any suggestions, Hyp, or anyone else?

Getting up from prone, whether to the kneeling or the standing position, provokes an attack of opportunity. The only way to avoid an AoO when getting up is using the tumble skill as part of the withdrawl action.
