I think nothing in 4e can be considered "cluster f f" as you put it. Simple refinements may be needed. As for third party stuff, I think it will play a huge part. After all, people ARE complaining that there aren't enough of their classes and spells and stuff. Thus there's huge opportunity there for 3rd party publishers to make a buck. Not only that, but the GSL isn't as painful as people seem to claim. So what, there's a bunch of "look to the PHB" stuff in the SRD. All that does is say "hey, this stuff is based off our product, so you need to buy our product if you want to benefit from our system. We didn't put it in an SRD so that we don't get a dime out of it." WOTC made a wise business decision that I was wondering before this GSL why they weren't securing their bottom line more. Now they are. But it's going to be a boon in the long term to GSL publishers, because now they get to use the D&D logo which is actually a huge boon to them. There's a reason why companies like to use names and logos that are similar to larger brands, so that there's brand confusion (Swords & Sorcery anyone?). But here, it's not brand confusion, it's shear brand identity. Everyone should want to ride those coattails. Not only that, but they still have the flexibility to create their own systems around it without having to slave to it the way people seem to be thinking. The 4e GSL gives just as much freedom as the 3.5 GSL, except now you have to own the PHB to benefit from anything in the 3rd party publishers material that references the SRD information. Hardly worth crying about. 4e is going to be stronger than ever in 1) license, 2) exposure, and 3) amount (as well as efficiency) of supplemental material.
