One thing to remember is that in arid deserts, the most precious thing available is Water. To desert-dwellers, Water is more valuable then gold, and is treasured as such. Dune took this to extremes by having the Arakkis natives wear bodysuits which collected and purified their own sweat and urine to conserve water, and dehydrated their own dead to salvage every drop of water from them. Apply this concept to a fantasy universe, and the most important individuals in the region will be magic-users who can magically find, summon or create water. Likewise, if you want to invent fantastic desert-dwelling creatures, water will be an important thing for them: perhaps a desert-leech that drains water from it's victims, or a predator that stalks waterholes for thirsty prey... Another thing to remember is that at night, almost all deserts become very cold places, as the heat accumulated in the day soon evaporates, cooling the ground rapidly. At this point, dew and sometimes icecrystals form on the ground, and some creatures become active just to collect this rare water. Hope that helped.
