The stuff in the 5e books is still fairly generic with stuff taken from multiple settings. The most common being Greyhawk and the Realms. Given that Greyhawk was the default it more or less means not much has changed. Also FR is not the Core setting the D&D multiverse is. FR is just were the first adventures are taking place. Anyway in the Realms the High Level NPC's are not aware of everything going on in the realms. Guys like Elminster are off mysteriously doing their own thing. Which can be important to the realms as a whole or important to them. Guys like Drizzt and the Companions while high level are still mortal and can be threatened by a large gang of monsters. (They would be around the level 15 to 17 mark.) They tend to deal with more local problems in their area and are while you may hear of them are unlikely to see them. In Greyhawk which also has high level NPC's they tend to be selfish and are in pursuit of wealth rather then looking to solve all the problems around them.</blockquote>
