Toril in general is a significant, but not central, location in important events - that is, the interplay between the great powers of wildspace. Involved gods... aren't. I don't like FR-style meddling gods, especially since not all the worlds I'm using have them. The setting has advanced 50 years from the current FRCS, and some of the current/past events were changed around a bit. The major bits: Fourty years ago, cities of the Sword Coast bought up major firearms shipments from the scro (who were in turn buying them from Caen and Arcanis). Concerned about a possible alliance on the doorstep of Evermeet, the Elven Imperial Navy convinced Evermeet's royalty to launch a preemptive strike on Waterdeep and Luskan, the primary importers. Luskan was sacked, Waterdeep badly damaged, and the fighting eventually spilled out to cover most of the Sword Coast. Human reinforcements from Thay (see below), Shou-Lung and allied worlds repulsed the invasion, and the surviving Sword Coast became a federal body known as the Waterdhavian Alliance. Thay is Faerun's greatest power and probably the third or fourth greatest power in space (after the Elven Imperial Navy, the scro and, arguably, the Hu-Charad giants of Dor-Erthenos). It is the primary supplier of magic items to the Known Spheres, especially to human countries, and the lynchpin of the League of Spelljamming Races formed to oppose elven and scro domination. Szass-Tam is the Chancellor of the League (and, yes, he does sound like Palpatine. ;) ) Shou-Lung is the second most important country after Thay, followed by Waterdeep. The rest of the world is mostly groundling and increasingly weak. Several of these minor powers have been overthrown by groundling orcs with support from the scro, including Zhentil Keep and the Silver Marches; the scro are also heavily involved in Rashemen, fanning the flames of hatred against Thay. Most elven enclaves have been ostracized since the invasion of the Sword Coast; most humanoids are more likely to side with scro than elves on Toril. Of the (in?)famous Chosen and assorted named good guy NPCs, only Khelben is a major player, and that only because he's a Lord of Waterdeep and Councillor of the League of Spelljamming Races.
