From when construction started to evacuation how long much time would you say had past? I get the impression that they were just finishing the final defenses when they fell under attack.

ever play the B-wing expansion for Xwing fighter?

the end of that was a cut scene for the landing of hoth ....

I have no idea on time frames

The Battle of Hoth and the evacuation of Echo Base happened about 3 years after the Battle of Yavin and the evacuation of Yavin.

Remember that they would have needed time to scout out a location for the new base, dig it out of snow and ice, transport all the equipment and personnel, and then get it all up and running.

An estimate of months, with them just completing the final preparations as the attack happens, is probably a good one.

They were there for about three months. Most of the base was part of a much older abandoned structure.

If you want a semi-canon source, the cut scenes and story text for the game X-wing and it's B-wing expansion had a good bit of info on this. They flitted around the galaxy for almost 3 years looking for a new good base. I beleive they were "fleet-bound" for a long time, just moving the armada from system to system, to keep ahead of the Imperials.

Unfortunately, It's been a LOOONG time since I've played X-wing.

Actually, they weren't fleet-bound before Hoth, or at least not for long.

After the Rebels are forced from Yavin IV, they relocated to Thila before establishing Echo Base on Hoth. After Hoth, they banded together into a large fleet.

And I'm not sure that the X-Wing game is considered "canon" or even "semi-canon". Computer games don't tend to be incorporated into a setting's canon history of events...

To me, it seems that nearly everything in Starwars is canon, as long as the authors bought the rights. I am not really sure about it, but see - in TIE Fighter, Grand Admiral Thrawn (beginning as Vice Admiral :) ) is presented, and Zahn wrote about him in his first starwars books (Heir to the Empire and so on) (some of the best books, and my favorite starwars character). (I believe Zahn wrote the books before TIE Fighter, but I am not sure now. Don`t have the books here)

Even if it is not canon, as long no one wrote "canon" about it, I think X-Wing and the books are the best points to look if you want to design your campaign...

Flipping through the "Rebellion Era Sourcebook" from WotC, it doesn't say how long the Rebels were in Echo Base, but mentions that "Seemingly overnight" Echo Base was built from the natural ice cavers found there, and that it was never meant to be a permanent settlement. The Rebels were there to regroup, and according to Rebel tactics, were ready to leave at a moments notice.
