your clarification doesnt clear much up....not to be mean or anything-it justs asks who makes the beds (or clean the sheets- or actually produces them) i know that everyone reading this post knows what you are asking- but just want to be mean. to sum up: Does the DM or the players creates the characters? DM= dungeon master- or GOD players= the person who RP a character character= the fictional vessel in which to RP my answer wouldbe the individual players. every player has an idea of what they want to play- and to force them into a character that they dont like is just askin for trouble. I had a Dm that did that to me once. We had a group that lacked a cleric. But he loves clerics so he raped us by killing the PCs and then ask "you can be resurrected and take a lvl down, or play a cleric and stay at your current lvl." He killed me twice- so I decided to give up my Barb and played a cleric. He was happy for a while- but I wasnt playing the cleirc the way he expected and so eventually railed me into playing an NPC in which he controled most the actions of- or told me what to do. I just quit basically if the players make the char- then they have an idea of how he is and how he behaves. If the Dm makes it- the player cannot play to what the Dm expects- and so there is always room for conflict...
