How many players is Tomb of Horrors intended for?

I am referring to both the RPGA freebie and the super-adventure. I recently got ahold of them both, and neither say whether they're meant for four or five players.

Okay, thanks. I thought it was five players, but I didn't want to risk having too many players and making it actually possible.

The general design of D&D is for 4-6 players. Basically enough to get all four roles and a few extras to differentiate the party structure without bogging everything down.

For anybody who actually ran the original module in 4e, how many backup characters did you allow? I'm thinking of allowing one backup per player. I've heard the 4e conversion isn't as deadly, so that should be enough. How often did you allow an extended rest?
