Killing off Kara Zor-El in Crisis #7 was a mistake. That's why we've seen so many resurrections of the character. It was originally done because they thought there were too many Kryptonians running around (Phantom Zone villains, bottled city of Kandor...), and they wanted Superman to be the Last Son of Krypton again. In the last story arc of the Supergirl comic, Peter David brought the original teen Silver Age Supergirl into the current timeline. Linda (former Matrix, the Fallen Angel) found out that Kara would have died if she returned to her own timeline, so Linda took her place, returning to the pre-Crisis universe. The whole "married to Superman" thing was like one panel, and they had a daughter named Ariella. But this timeline was not meant to be, and Linda had to give up this life and let teen Kara return to her own timeline (and her death). So Linda never really married Superman. After this life was snatched away from her, Linda hung up the cape. For a while, readers speculated that the main character of Fallen Angel was her. Peter David had intended to keep teen Kara around, with both Supergirls starring in the book, but the book was cancelled. Anyway, there are two other Supergirls that haven't been mentioned yet. A Daxamite named Laurel Gand, cousin of Lar Gand (Mon-El) was created to take Supergirl's place in the Legion of Super-Heroes, and took the super-hero name Andromeda. And there was a new Supergirl in the DC 1 000 000 story arc, in the 753rd (?) Century.
