Hmm, in the 5e campaign I’m a player in, I think our DM just makes stuff up as he goes along. Last session, we were in a room that was a timed “test” to see if we could get across it, with various curses. Mine was that I - the player - had to speak only in rhyme, for declaring actions, talking in character, or anything else. Another character was deaf, another character had feet that turned to stone and couldn’t move. When we figured out there were “ghost sharks” swimming in the water barrier we had to cross, my 9th level warlock did Eldritch Blast, as one does. Natch 20 and a 15 or something. Hit but they were “immune”, so no damage, no 10 ft. pushback on hits. It turns out the “ghost sharks” can fly and hover. When stone feet guy was in trouble, I cast Jallarzi’s Storm of Radiance. They were immune to the Thunder half of the damage, but not the radiance. On my next turn, I do concentration to keep the Storm in good form. It’s on the ghost shark who might kill the stone foot PC, so I totally want to use my limited non-Eldritch Blast combat spell to save our pal. DM says, “No, you don’t have to concentrate, you can cast another spell and it will keep going.” (Is that right?! Maybe I am misunderstanding 5e?) In no position to debate with rhymes getting in my way, I Eldritch Blast again. Two hits for damage, no pushback. Stone foot guy’s shark is next hit by a spell from another PC, it blows up, and stone feet is saved. Now maybe mistakes were made, or special circumstances applied, but it felt to me like it was all Rule Zero. I like Rule Zero, but overriding consistency and rules and dice rolls routinely seems a bit off. I think the goal is cinematic: “create cool scenes where someone almost dies but someone else gets to be the hero”, rather than paying much attention to rules. My slow but consistent Eldritch Blast guy doesn’t fit very well.
