How much damage can I take by running headfirst into a wall?

I'd agree with the d6 per 10' similar to falling damage. I suppose you could give them their strength modifier if they really want to throw themselves into it.

a club does 1d6 + str

falling does 1d6 / 10'

Per my akido master friend, you can not move your body faster than gravity (and thus he taught how to move out of the way by falling to where you want to be).

Therefore, using these 3 principles, it seems that one can probably not run faster at a wall than you can fall. Therefore, you cannot really take more damage than what you would take from a fall.

Note, that running cannot increase your speed per 10', unlike falling, therefore, you can't take 2d6 by running 20'

:) Amusingly, the thread title seems to imply that Noumenon is going to be running into a brick wall himself... in which case the damage could be broken nose, broken teeth, broken jaw, lots of bruises, and possible brain damage, so I would recommend not doing it...
For SCIENCE!

Charge!

The Auld Grump, hey, where'd that wall go?

Speed plus called shot; head - so I think I would go d6 for each square to the wall, plus d10 for head shot.

run up to wall 3 squares = 3d6 - head shot d10 = damage 3d6+d10

My house rule for this has been to use falling damage... yes, this has come up in my game. Usually by a bad guy tossing someone but it also came up when the Kobold wanted to get thrown at the enemy....

The difference is that I allowed the character to use his Dex or Str mod to either reduce or increase the damage.

So in this case, running against a wall would be 1D6 per 10' of running movement, or 1D6 per 20' of hustling, or just 1D6 + str for trying a head bash on the wall.

Later this week I plan on tossing a number of PCs against various walls, and I might even use the 'encase head in mud' thing on them :)

RAW may indicate normally zero damage from running into a wall.
In feather fall you can be falling 60 feet per round and suffer no damage and most people don't run faster than that. falling 10 feet in Earth's physics results in a speed of 25.367 ft/s or ~150 feet per round - and that just equates to 1d6 damage.

It would be up to the DM to rule on intentional damage depending on the situation.

The question was from 20 years and 2 edirions ago.

I'd probably just roll 2d6, one die of damage for the clay and one for the player. The the answer to this question IMO should be simple however its ruled.
