How much money should cohorts start off with?

Full wealth, according to the "wealth by character level" table in the DMG? Half wealth, as an NPC? No wealth, since they're part of the PC?

I've always assumed NPC wealth. (which is different than 1/2 PC wealth as I recall).

I use full wealth for cohorts and NPC wealth for all other followers.
I view cohorts as "PC" class NPC's.

I'd say that the cohort comes along with standard NPC gear for their level, but expect them to outstrip that progression due to generous masters.

Away from my DMG - does that apply to special cohorts (dragons etc) as well? Would they have wealth by monster type, wealth by Character Level Equivalent, none...?

(sigh) Here we go again. It references back to "Monsters as Races". In the DMG, monster characters only get gear according to their class levels (DMG p. 24, paragraph 3). Those using supplement rules would, I'm sure, apply those instead, getting gear according to ECL as I understand.

I would suggest standard NPC wealth.

Of course, the cohort will rapidly approach PC levels of wealth for his level while lagging behind the PCs.
