Well, hello EnWorld boards, this is my first post here and I'm posting after a request from Snofox over at the chat room. The following table will show how the Starting Wealth for Player Characters is calculated. (At least from level 1-20, don't have the ELH yet.) It's possible they go another route from there on. Unfortunately, there is no fancy formula like a few people have guessed (hoped?), but it's instead based on the Average Treasure Per Encounter table presented in chapter 7 of the DMG, with some rounding off to make the table look better. The Level columns is obvious The Wealth Column is the starting-wealth for a character of his level (duh!). The Since Last Level Column is the difference in starting-wealth between the levels. You will notice that the Treasure x3 column is somewhat similar to the Since Last Level Column. This column is based the Average Treasure Per Encounter table presented in chapter 7 of the DMG. I just multiplied the number in the aforementioned table with 3. (I guess this would represent a group of 4 characters doing 14.33 encounters between levels, where they would have treasure from 12 of the encounters left after leveling). The Difference Column shows the difference between the Since Last Level Column and the Treasure x3 Column. This Column shows hove the designers have rounded off to make the Starting Wealth table look nicer. (There is some strange rounding offs here!)
STARTING WEALTH AVERAGE TREASURE PER ENCOUNTER Level Wealth Since last lvl Level Treasure x3 Difference 2 900 + 900 1 900 3 2700 + 1800 2 1800 4 5400 + 2700 3 2700 5 9000 + 3600 4 3600 6 13000 + 4000 5 4800 - 800 7 19000 + 6000 6 6000 8 27000 + 8000 7 7800 + 200 9 36000 + 9000 8 10200 - 1200 10 49000 + 13000 9 13500 - 500 11 66000 + 17000 10 17400 - 400 12 88000 + 22000 11 22500 - 500 13 110000 + 22000 12 24000 - 2000 14 150000 + 40000 13 39000 + 1000 15 200000 + 50000 14 51000 - 1000 16 260000 + 60000 15 66000 - 6000 17 340000 + 80000 16 84000 - 4000 18 440000 + 100000 17 108000 - 8000 19 580000 + 140000 18 141000 - 1000 20 760000 + 180000 19 183000 - 3000
I'm quite sure this is how the designers made the Starting Wealth Table, and if somone would check how this stand up to the ELH I would be pleased. (Wheter it strengthens my theory or screws it over).
