Firstly, thank you for your very encouraging reply. Secondly this is a good point. I'm trying to do this. I want to make choices and relationships matter. They did something very generous, while seemingly unimportant in session 2, so I've been keeping that tucked away to make sure I can show them the fruits of what they've done later. With that said, I do have another issue that I failed to mention in my OP. We play very infrequently. Our first session was in September, and we've yet to schedule our fifth, but I suspect it'll be soon. So averaging a session every other month has it's own struggles. I tried to sow a lot of these seeds from out of the gate, and then once I realized that most of them would likely be forgotten, I've changed my strategy to fewer, but hopefully more meaningful/memorable things. For instance there's not really been any recurring characters yet, but there's been two recurring factions. I am hoping to put a couple of recurring NPCs into future sessions however. So a couple of people here have mentioned backgrounds, and it led me to realize I made a mistake during character creation. I went around the table and helped three of my players build characters while the other two were able to handle their own. I realize now though that I totally skipped backgrounds. So I think at the start of the next session I'll bring them up and let everyone pick one. Thank you again.
