I personally liked the season finale of Angel. (The Spin-off of Buffy the Vampire slayer) After taking out the Lieutenants of the horrible demons from another dimension, some of the crew are dead, most are at least wounded. They gather together to prepare for the inevitable retaliation. As colossal shadowy figures loom on the horizon, they know they have almost zero chance, Angel says, "I always wanted to slay a dragon." and the group rushes head-long into battle. Fade to black, roll credits. Perhaps the best way is to end it just before the final stand. Give them a chance to take on the witch who can't be seen, and maybe a demon general, and an ogre warlord, all who arrive ahead of Ferruus(like the name by the way) perhaps to win his favor by clearing the way, or to negotiate a surrender, or maybe just to have some fun before the end really begins. Maybe these will be TPKs, maybe they'll defeat them. Then, when the night finally comes, the well howls and so on, the colossus rises from the earth, looms in the distance silhouetted by flashes of lightning as a rain of blood begins pouring from the sky, you describe the valiant heroes, beat, but not beaten charge off into the darkness, a last defiant stand against the inevitable. Not because there is any hope, but because they're freakin' heroes, and thats what heroes do.
