How to put together a BECMI mini-series...

Okay, see, here's what I don't get. I *have* the books. I have holmes, I have mentzer, I have that whole set... with multiple copies. I'm running a short mini-campaign, so PCs aren't going higher than around 5th or 6th level, max.

I have a couple of good monster books for it, a few premade dungeons that I will be pilfering as I see fit... so why do I need Dark Dungeons, or any other retro-clone?

Why get a retro-clone if you already have the real thing?

If you have the real thing...why don't you play the real thing?

I think people are suggesting retroclones because you want things that have already been done.

The ideas such as ascending AC have already been covered by free materials which you can download. These retroclone ideas cover what you are asking.

If you want to run BECMI (what you are asking sounds MORE like a 3.X retroclone rather than BECMI...which is why you are getting the suggestions) than RUN BECMI. If you want to run BECMI with options that ARE NOT common items covered in Retroclones...then ask about them and I'm certain people might stop suggesting retroclones as much.

Hope that explains why people are suggesting retroclones left and right.

Respectfully, Greylord, I'm not sure that's it. If you read my lsat post before my little "rant", you'll see the list of house rules I'd settled on. None of those rules were either very complex or were in any way "new school" - the newest idea being the secondary skills house rule, which is ripped right from the 1e era. I had even decided on the old school Attack Matrice.

With those suggested house rules, I honestly have no idea why a retro clone would be at all preferable to the real thing. After all, the original retro clones were never really put together to actually USE... they were put together as a work-around so that people could publish new material. People suggesting I use the retro clone instead of the original material therefore kind of.... perplexes me.

But fair enough, and I apologize for what is probably seen as overreacting. I was up late last night, just a tad grumpy, and took it out on the internet I guess. My apologies to all.

False! The point of any thread asking for advice is to be forced to play a different game altogether. A couple years ago, 90% of posts would be telling you to play Savage Worlds instead. That would be true even if you were asking about good openings in Chess.

;)

That being said, a game like the one you're describing would work a billion times better in Phoenix Command.

One of the best things about BECMI is of course the most excellent Gazetteer line, way ahead of its time in terms of quality setting material.
