We just finished this session a couple of hours ago. .. Quick recap The group's Long Rest is interrupted by Birdbrainbeakedopus (aka Grell) and some Volts. Using strategic combat tactics and spells, they defeat the aberrant creatures. After an easier and faster trip downriver, they have another audience with the lizardfolk queen, and decide to accompany her to meet the Prefect in Saltmarsh while considering various regional threats and conspiracies. Summary Rude Awakening As the 3rd watch (Lamech and Dodi) went to awaken the final watch (Grandinar and Murtaugh), they heard a strange buzzing sound, followed by the appearance of the mysterious Grell (aka Birdbrainbeakedopus), along with smaller creatures called Volts -- floating balls of fur with bug eyes and a thick naked tail. Dodi and Lamech successfully awakened everyone to alert them to the attack. Shockingly Tentacly Lamech took a shot at the grell come down at him from above with his crossbow, hitting it. He then moved to wake up Yaakov, while Temo woke up and moved to get a better view of the creatures. Dodi woke up Murtaugh, who was asleep in the boat. He grabbed his heavy crossbow and began to load it, taking cover behind the mast. Yaakov, upon waking, decided to cast a bless spell on Grandinar, Lamech, and Temo, while instructing Xpyali to find cover and shoot at the creatures when safe. Lamech called to Josiah and empowered the group with an emboldening bond. The group continued their battle against the volts and grell. While the volts were all defeated before they could do much damage, the grell were more difficult to take down. Staying out of reach to take advantage of their superior reach with their tentacles. Yaakov helped to bring one down by taking a running jump and slicing it with his magic sword, Bloodstar. Grandinar's fire bolts were key in defeating it as well. A second grell attacked Murtaugh. The old guard took significant damage and was ultimately grappled, carried off by the grell. The party working together to bring down the grell. After the combat ended, Grandinar stabilized Murtaugh using a medicine check, and later Lamech used a cure wounds spell to bring him back to consciousness. Murtaugh survived the encounter, though he humorously remarked, "I'm too old for this naughty word." River Navigation Challenges With their chance for restful sleep ruined, the group waits for the sun to finish coming up and then continues their journey down the river. Temo finds a path to roll the boat on logs back to the river, which is a team effort that takes about three hours. On the river, they encounter rapids and debris from a recent flood, requiring them to navigate through challenging conditions. The party discusses their options for proceeding, with Craig suggesting they stay in the boat rather than attempting to portage it due to the heavy weight and potential risks. They debate whether to take a wider, debris-filled path or a narrower route around an island, ultimately deciding to stay in the boat and carefully navigate through the debris. The journey proves more difficult than expected, but they make good progress toward their destination. Arrival and Strategic Planning The Blind Censor makes it through the final obstacle of patches of debris in the river, with Grandinar and Lamech teaming up to scan the route and calling back directions for Temo on the rudder. They finally arrive at the lizard folk mound in the late afternoon, where Queen O'Thok'ent and her people are preparing for an assault on the sahuagin lair. The party learned that the sahuagin are using the old lizardfolk lair as a base of operations, raising concerns about their presence in the region. The Revenants of Saltmarsh considered their next steps, with options including accompanying the Queen back to Saltmarsh to meet the Prefect, investigating claims about the green dragon made by the bullywug prisoner they had sent back with Silthru, or seeking information from the elves in Silver Stand about the sahuagin. They ultimately decided to accompany the Queen, aiming to potentially influencing the Prefect's advisors. They agreed to leave the next day, with Lamech suggesting there might be a conspiracy brewing in Saltmarsh that they could help address. The session ended with the group agreeing to meet again on July 5th, and DM announced he would replenish everyone's hero points.
