In today's second short adventure, the PCs:

Were contacted by a wealthy nobleman family whose son they'd rescued back in their second adventure (this was #12), as he'd been kidnapped and the kidnappers (apparently not very well educated, as indicated by all of the misspellings in their ransom note) demanded payment of 250 gp at midnight, to be delivered to a dwarven gravel quarry at the edge of town
Were told the parents would pay the PCs to rescue their son again and kill his kidnappers as a lesson to any who might think this was an easy way to make some quick coin
Reconnoitered the gravel pit to get a feel for the layout, and made their plans
Showed up at the gravel pit 15 minutes early, to see the padlock on the front gate open on the ground and the chain keeping the gate closed removed
Had the human monk, human scout, and mongrelfolk adept cautiously approach through the gate, while the changeling rogue spider climbed up the security fence and lay prone on the roof of a tool shed, pointing his loaded light crossbow down at the ramshackle structure in the middle of the 10-foot-deep gravel pit, where they assumed the young nobleman was being held captive
Heard a kidnapper call up from the shack for them to bring the money down, and when the scout demanded "proof of life" of the young nobleman, heard him call out "Who's there?" (and they could tell it was his voice)
Had the snow fox hengeyokai take on animal form so she'd be small enough to squeeze through the bars of the security fence, and when she advanced along the outer perimeter, she spotted kenku archers sneaking into position outside the fence
Had the human scout open the door to the shack, toss in a sunrod, and see the captive tied to a chair with a bag over his head and his hands behind him, and then she and the mongrelfolk entered the shack to go untie him, only to find he was already dead (throat slit) and had likely been that way for close to a day (and that's when they remembered kenku can mimic the voices of anyone they've heard before, which accounted for "his" voice calling out to them earlier)
Were surprised when a kenku rogue hiding behind stacked wooden boards in the back of the shack tossed down a flask of chemicals that mirrored a stinking cloud spell, nauseating the scout and the adept
Found out there were 14 kenku rogues and a kenku sorcerer surrounding the gravel pit, able to fire arrows from their shortbows (and spells, in the case of the sorcerer) down at the PCs
Had the monk use his extra speed to race back up the ladder, out the gate, and take on the nearest archers with his spiked chain (they had 5 hp each, so pretty much each hit was a kill, up until the end when he started rolling like crap for damage)
Took out a bunch of the rogues with bolts from the changeling rogue, the monk's chain (seriously, he took care of at least half of the kenku rogues himself), while the hengeyokai and the changeling rogue took on the kenku sorcerer
Watched as three rogues set fire to their arrows and set the shack ablaze when the scout and adept failed to exit (the kenku rogue inside the shack with them snuck out through a loose board in the back, which the scout eventually discovered on her own and followed suit)
Watched as no fewer than seven kenku rogues dropped their bows and swarmed the monk, finally dealing him some serious damage with the Aid Another and Great Ally special abilities
Killed the sorcerer and most of the rogues, with the scout shooting a fleeing rogue in the back with her heavy crossbow once she'd finally fought off the nausea
Had the monk finish off the remaining rogues, then went in to fetch the young nobleman's corpse before the shack burned down
Determined the whole scheme had been a trap for them, since the kenku owner of the gambling den they'd dealt a solid blow to in their second adventure wanted revenge
Returned the young nobleman's body to his parents and were paid what they'd been promised despite his being dead (once they learned he'd already been dead when they first received the ransom note), and his parents vowed to have him raised from the dead
However, there will be a slight glitch in raising him from the dead, which will be the focus of the next adventure, which we won't play until 1 Jan 25.
