In today's "Down to Erthe" campaign session, the PCs:

Agreed to serve as additional security on a newly-purchased ship, as the rich family took it on a "shakedown cruise" - a four-hour trip to a deserted island for a picnic lunch, some swimming and sunbathing, and a return before dinner
Two hours into the voyage, fought a sea drake that dropped onto deck looking for a quick meal
Tossed the sea drake overboard after slaying it, as the ship's owner didn't want to upset his wife (who was in the berth resting after a bout of seasickness) when she came back up on deck
Noticed a crewman in the rigging setting off a smokestick when they arrived at "Picnic Island," where another ship soon came rounding the island
Saw this second ship was flying the skull and crossbones flag and its captain called to be prepared to be boarded
Heard their ship's captain admit he and his crew were in league with the pirates, the rich family would be sold into slavery, their ship added to the pirate fleet, and the PCs were to stand down and turn themselves over to the combined pirate forces
Had the human scout leap overboard, revert back to mermaid form, and swim off to a nearby pod of whales she'd spotted, where she used her magic trident (which allows her speak with ocean creatures) to convince a baleen whale to return with her and destroy the pirate vessel
Fought off the boarding pirates and the crew already on board, only to have half the pirates' forces slain when the baleen whale swam beneath the pirate ship and tossed it onto its side, then returned to his pod
Fought off the pirates who did manage to come aboard and the original crew and captain, until only two of the crew members were left alive, at which point they were allowed to surrender
Limped back to their home port (fortunately the ship's owner knew a little about seafaring), after the mermaid PC provided temporary water breathing abilities to the fox hengeyokai wu jen and they explored the sunken pirate vessel, unearthing a chest of coins plundered from recent attacks on other ships
Got paid when they got back to port, at which point the ship's owner vowed to sell the damn thing and stay on land from now on
The scout PC's player had a fun time going "full mermaid" for most of the adventure, especially when I allowed her to leap up out of the water, stab an enemy at the ship's railing with her trident, and - if she did enough damage - flip him over her head into the sea as she fell back down into the water (where they inevitably drowned). She killed three foes that way, including the original ship's traitorous captain. Johnathan
