they assaulted the Dungeon of the Dweller. Made short work of the Stinking Troglodytes and ogres guarding the enterance- so quick, an alarm was never raised! (module even says the dimwitted ogre with the horn only remembers to use it 30% of the time, lol.) They then decided to follow the left hand wall. (BIG cave complex) Which, as luck would have it, took them away from where the main body of trogs resides, and into a side complex. There, they were ambushed by a small group of Trogs, guarding a big cave full of giant mushrooms (and violet Fungi!) from whatever was beyond. What's beyond turned out to be MORE big shrooms, a black Pudding, a metric butt load of bats, giant Bombardier Beetles, a giant Vampire bat, and a Gorgon. They said NOPE! to a second cave of bats- which also contained a bunch of Stirges. In the first bat cave, the fireball the sorceror cast at the giant vampire bat and bombardier beetles caused the THOUSANDS of bats in the colony to go into a wild panic. Everyone took damage from the buffeting and bites, as the bats tried to gtfo. The 4 remaining beetles then got them with their acid clouds. We nearly lost a few members to the Gorgon, as it caught them all in it's poison cloud- and 3 characters barely made the saving throw. That was a heck of a fight, but they took it down with no losses. It turned out to have a few choice bits of loot- a bunch of gold, and a magic great axe. (substituted for the key orb for a relic that no longer exists) They then retraced their steps, and explored 2 more caves- one with 6 Giant Minotaur lizards in it. At this point, spell slots were getting low, everyone had some minor damage, and they had yet to meet any of the primary residents. So a plan was concocted. Sooner or later, the wiped out main guardpost would be noticed. And so would the other guards in the mushroom cavern. However, they were in a section of deserted caves well away from where everyone must be. Thus they chose to set up the Cleric's Leomund's Tiny Hut (Twilight domain spell), in a no traffic empty cavern and take a long rest. Betting that the residents would redouble the guards- and be expecting trouble from without. While the party was already inside their defenses. The preferred choice to leaving and coming back- and presumably face a much more wary and prepared group! I made several wandering monster checks, but nothing came along. So, the Trogs at least, are aware SOMEBODY killed 10 of them at 2 guard posts, but nobody saw anyone. No strangers or invading force was found wandering around looking for trouble, so they assumed a raid by rival monsters, or someone else they'd pissed off and prepared a "nice surprise" for them, if they came back. They also sent out some scouts, to see if anyone was lurking in the area. I ended the session there. They lucked into the "easy" section of the caves. What's left is the home of a big group of Trogs, a bunch of Ogres, and a group of hill giants- plus some guests. Should be interesting to see who is more surprised next time!
