Tonight's "Middle of Elsewhere" campaign session had us tracking down an elven seer who'd been kidnapped by Muspelheim fire giants. The PCs:

Entered Muspelheim through a cave gate, saw a 40-ft stone building with a fire giant guard on the roof and another 40 feet from the entry doors
Cast a divination spell to determine whether the elf seer was inside; the spell failed, despite a 77% chance of success - crap!
As the rooftop giant had his back turned, concentrated their initial attacks on the one on the ground, fighting him in the zone of a silence spell to avoid letting the others hear sounds of battle
Slew him, but at the cost of the enlarged fiendish orc fighter PC being dropped so low it took my cleric's most powerful spell converted to healing to keep him alive (but still unconscious), and a shadow unicorn summoned by the human shadow druid to get him back up on his feet
Entered the first floor of the building, encountering two more fire giants, while the owl familiar peeked through the arrow slits and determined the elf was not in the building at all
Had the owl channel a touch of idiocy spell on the female fire giant (as she looked to be some sort of spellcaster) on the second floor and dropped her Int, Wis, and Cha by 4 points each; he then evacuated the building before she could retaliate
Fought the two fire giants on the first floor, eventually destroying their greatswords with the druid's rusting grasp spell, but realized there was no way we were going to overpower them after they slew the fiendish orc fighter outright
Asked the whereabouts of the elf seer, and were told (after an "Is that what this is all about?") they'd been hired by drow to kidnap her, and she'd been turned over to the drow in Nispelheim
Got directions to the entry to Nispelheim and left with our dead orc fighter, knowing he'd return to life the next day (as we're on a layer of Ysgard, and he was slain in battle)
So, the whole adventure was made up of multiple foes each much more powerful than we were, and the whole thing was a "Sorry, Mario, but your princess is in another castle" adventure. It kind of left a bad taste in our mouths. But we were close enough to 8th level that we earned enough XP to push us over the edge, so there's that. Johnathan
