We've had all these questions about art, printing costs, freelancers, layout, payment, etc. But how about the whole picture? What about the publishing budget? What is the budget and what percentages go to what? What kind of things to to keep in mind, hidden costs, what is the list of things to do? All these questions and a whole thread to fill with answers ;-) Seriously, i'm trying to sort out what it takes to publish an idea, and although a lot of information has been given in the past, everything covered very specific aspects of the publishing business. Please don't mind the (maybe) somewhat incoherent piece of text i'm trying to write here, it's late, it has been a bussy week, and i'm tired, but full of ideas... -You can expect to get about 40% of the cover price from the distributer. -Cover prices range from $5 to $50 (ball park), the exact cover price depends on page count, presentation (color vs. B/W, hard vs. softcover, paper quality), the amount of art, the quality, the audience, reputation, etc. [note to self: make list of factors that influence cover price and try to 'quantify' them, try to come to a workable formula] -Printing, spend about 10% of coverprice??? [note to self: i think i heard that somewhere, could be my failing mind though] -4cts a word seems like the decent thing to pay a quality freelancer -promptly forgot what the decent thing to pay for an editor is [note to self: try to not forget the important people] -Cover art (color) is expensive $300 (ball park) -Interior art, depends on quality, style, medium. [note to self: find out what's desireable and what it costs for quality work, preference goes toward ink and line art for B&W book. Also check wheter it's desirable to use only a very small selection of artist (prev one) for a book] -Layout, styles, font, borders, [note to self: think long and hard about this, your supposed to know something about this] I have way more questions, but coherency is way past comprehendable...
