I'll just suggest something simple that worked fine for me: Church Inquisitor prestige class in Complete Divine. It's not much better than regular cleric, but you can enter pretty early and easily, it doesn't hurt your CL, and gives you a few more skill points and actual class features. In my case, I did a Dwarf Cleric, using the Races of Stone racial substitution level (Cleric 4, I think) to permanenlty lose a level 2 spell slot for Weapon Specialization with all hammers. I also started my career as Fighter 1 to help with combat (and there's likewise a Races of Stone racial sub. level for Dwarf Fighter 1 for free Weapon Focus with all axes), but you don't need to do that. Other than that, it's pretty simple, tank up in the best armor you can, use a shield and waraxe. Some spells from Spell Compendium to look at: Close Wounds (level 2): Immediate action ranged healing that, explicitly per the description, can prevent a character from dying with the on the spot healing. Healing Lorecall (level 2): Lasts 10 min/level, though it requires ranks in heal skill to do any good. When you heal someone with ANY cure spell, you can also remove one of a laundry list of really nasty conditions, even stuff like Daze. So, buff with this and carry a wand of cure minor wounds. :) Delay Death (level 4): Immediate action, ranged. For one round/level, the target cannot die from hit point damage. Just heal him up before the spell runs out! Note that without Diehard to fight on while dying, the target's still going to just be laying there unconscious if in the negatives anyway.
