"I dive into the Bush of Burning Rashes"

when you are DMing and your PC's do something amazingly hero-ish, do you require a check?

"I cut off my pinky"

"I eat the Glass Spider"

"I dive into the razorblade and alcohol filled pool"

When they do something just that nutty, but possible, do you make them fort or will save, or just assume that is what heroes do?

Oh, I definitely make them roll a save because there has to be consequences for actions -- even if it is heroic. And sometimes heroic can = stupid. Besides, there are a lot of dead heros scattering the lands of many campaigns. Just my 2 cents worth...

No, but sometimes I will ask for a DC 5 wisdom check, and if successful, remind them that they don't necessarily feel it in their best interests to do this thing. :) If they do it anyway, then, let the dice fall where they may.

Absolutely, though I give them a bonus for good description or sheer gutsiness. I really LOVE it when my players are so into their goals that they are willing to sacrifice their character's well-being to accomplish them. Leaping down 2 or three flights of stairs, as a third level character, to stop the bad guy getting away... that sort of thing.

Depends on the style of game.

In my gritty modern games, or my urban Arcanis campaign, I call for Will saves to be that brave. Which is odd when I think of it, as that means that Wizards are going to be more likely to jump into a withering hail of auto-fire than a Fighter.

Hmmmm....

Depends upon what they are doing. For the options you described:

Nope, no roll needed for cutting off your pinky, you can always hit yourself.

Probably no roll for eating the glass spider unless it had poison in it. Just some light damage from chewing and swallowing glass shards - Oh! did you plan to swallow it whole? You didn't tell me that!

Maybe a roll for the razorblade/alcohol pool. You'll take damage, and I might rule that the extreme pain from the alcohol in the cuts requires a Fort or Will save to keep from passing out...but at least the cuts are clean - no chance for disease setting in!

Light damage from chewing and swallowing glass shards? I might be wrong, but I strongly suspect that swallowing glass shards would be lethal.

Normally no rolling for that sort of stuff in Dnd, but we play that set to 'heroic' - although the player would probably get a warning that they're about to hurt their character.

Some other systems would definitely need a roll... and may well provide the character with some sort of lovely mental damage to remember the experience by.

So would having an Ancient Red Dragon breath fire on you after attacking you with a bite/claw/claw/wing/wing/tail combo.
