I Don’t Care What WotC is Doing

Are fortune cards a sign of the Antichrist or just good clean fun? I I don’t care; I don’t use 4e ad-ons.

Will classic 4e get future support, or is it all 4.E from here on out? I don’t care; I have enough 4e material to last me a long long time.

What’s WotC giving us this year? I don’t care, maybe it’ll be worth talking about when I see it.

What’s with the online character builder? I don’t care; I don’t need software to do things for me.

Will we ever see D&D minis again? I don’t care; I don’t buy randomized merchandise.

Is PF doing better than 4e? How's Exalted and White Wolf doing? Where's Trailblazer and E6 on the chart? I don't care, because I know what I like.

Is 5e on the horizon? I don’t care; whether I stick with 4e or switch to 5e I’ll have fun playing.

What’s with Dungeon and Dragon Mag content? I didn’t care when Paizo wrote ‘em, and I don’t care now.

What’s with WotC’s confused PR? I don’t even read newspapers; why would I read this?

What coulda woulda shoulda WotC done to make 4e more popular? You guessed it--I don’t care.

What do I care about? I care about a lot o’ things, like why am I the only high-level DM I know? Why do some gamers say “I like random traits,” but never think to roll for skills, feats, etc? Is Jackson really directing the Hobbit, or was that news just another temporary news blip? Why is English the go-to accent for any foreign ancient Hollywood character? Why do the words scissor, muscle and scimitar need both Cs and Ss? How did MTV and VH1 both go from music videos to brainbleaching reality cr@p? What’s the practical difference between the U.S.’s electoral college system and European nations’ parliamentary system?

Also, AIDS. That’s a truly scary phenomenon, and worth worrying about.

If you don't care what WotC is doing, then they won't care about what you like or want. Accepting that is just fine, but pretending it doesn't have an impact is just silly. It's like saying that not voting takes you out of the political process. BS. Not voting enables others, making their votes worth more. Similarly, not caring means those that do have a more powerful impact on the future of the game.

Oddly, I do care - but I don't buy 4E stuff.

I've probably got enough D&D stuff to keep a small village playing D&D for years, but I'm always interested in what's coming next.

Minis gone? Bummer, there were monsters I was hoping would have come out in the easy-to-transport, don't-have-to-paint-them plastic (Gargantuan Green, for one).

Map tiles? Regardless of edition, I like these and can use them in just about any game.

Board Games - Get your D&D fix in one-shot bursts? Yes, please (though so far, I prefer Descent to the Castle Ravenloft boardgame ... maybe it'll get where I like it).

VTT? Kinda, got Fantasy Grounds but curious to see what WotC does with theirs.

Character Builder? Well, got me there - I don't do D&D 4E, but I'm willing to watch to see how the "industry leader" supports it, as that may have consequences for other such products.

D&D computer game? Definitely willing to give it a try (heck, XBOX D&D Heroes is one my favorite console D&D games).

4E essentials vs. "classic"? I keep watching, hoping the game will turn a corner where I want to try playing again. Essentials almost drew me in, but wasn't quite enough.

Dungeon and Dragon content? Don't get it (got a Pathfinder AP subscription), but if I ever swing back to playing D&D I'd like to know what state it's in before I plunk down money on it - especially Dungeon.

The state of 5E? Pathfinder? Exalted? Savage Worlds? Definitely - I want to know if it's something I'll be playing or I'm going to stop buying.

If WotC makes the "right things", I'll care about it, even buy it. So yes, I do care what WotC is doing.

Not voting enables others, making their votes worth more. Similarly, not caring means those that do have a more powerful impact on the future of the game.

It's not the not-voting that's the problem, it's the not-buying. Threads like this are very bad news. Not for me--I've never bought a WOTC product and never will, and I don't care whether Tequila Sunrise cares--but the fact that Tequila Sunrise doesn't care is bad news for WOTC.

This is a bit Zen, though. Because the fact that I've commented means that maybe somehow I do care whether Tequila Sunrise cares (otherwise I wouldn't have cared enough to comment). And maybe Tequila Sunrise cares, a tiny little bit. Otherwise he wouldn't have started the thread. Would he?

I don't care what WotC is doing, either. Primarily since we parted ways with 4e/GSL and I found greater satisfaction in Pathfinder-land.

I care about finding enough time to develop all the NPCs, adventure, and campaign ideas that knock around in my brain.

I care about nurturing a love of RPGs in my kids without over-doing it and burning them out on it.

I care about maintaining my existing adult-PC game and finding new players.

I'm mystified as to why the time spent discussing game companies and rules outweighs the time spent talking about campaigns, PCs, NPCs, adventures, etc. To me, it's like spending the majority of one's time focused on the owners and league rules of a professional sport rather than discussing the games themselves.

Folks, if you really don't care, don't spend your time talking about how you don't care! It isn't like you'll get anything constructive out of discussion on a topic you admit you don't care about.

So, how about you go off and talk about something you do care about?
