I just gained 3rd lvl - can I choose a feat before a class?

Well pretty much the title says it all. We are having a discussion on when you choose the feats gained at 3rd, 6th, etc. levels. At 3rd level can I choose a feat and then my class? The main discusion revolves going into Prestige classes. If you can gain the feat first then you could have all the prereqs needed and then level in your Prestige class. If you have to pick your class first then you might not be able to. What does everyone think? Is there a rule in the book that we have overlooked?

You pick your class first.

Easy rule to miss, but PHB 145-146 gives the order that things are done when you increase in level.

another way to look at it is: when you enter a prestige class, you have to have all of your prereqs in place before taking any PrC levels. you didn't have the feat at 2nd level, so you can't enter the PrC at third.

sorry, you'll have to wait til 4th level to become a Forsaker:D

Thank you. That was exactly what I needed. I was pretty sure I had read it somewhere but couldn't remember. Now I can show the DM. Thanks guys! :D

Looks like someone is heading for forsaker.

Actually, there are a few other prestige classes from third party books that can be aguired by third level as well. Forsaker is, though, the most well known.
