I Just Hocked Up a Gooey Hockey Thread

Just got back from watching the Penguins put up a surprisingly spirited fight against the Canucks.

The Penguins fought hard, and earned a point with a 4-3 overtime loss. Markus Naslund scored all four of our goals...the Pens just couldn't seem to understand that if you triple team Todd Bertuzzi, that kind of leaves a lot of room for Naslund to rack up goals.

The officiating was abominable for both teams all night.

Maybe they just didn't want to rough up an old friend? Are their any teams left tat the Pens have dump a salary to yet? It's like they've turned into the Islanders.

One of the fun hockey stories of the season so far: University of British Columbia backup goalie Chris Levesque suited up for the Vancouver Canucks last night.

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam031209/nhl_van-cp.html

Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier was injured that morning and there wasn't time before the game to call anyone up from the Canucks farm team in Winnipeg. So the Canucks tried to find the UBC goalie to back up Johan Hedberg. For whatever reason they couldn't reach the number one guy, so they contacted UBC's backup and signed him to a one game contract. This of course is the fantasy of every Canadian kid (myself included, when I was one) once the fantasy of actually getting into the NHL legitimately has passed.

Apparently Hedberg was shaken up during the game and there was a real chance (or danger? ;) ) of Levesque going into the game, but Hedberg recovered.

Okay, this is something I haven't yet grasped about hockey as I'm not a real big fan. In the "olden days" (about 5 years ago?) They simply had Wins, Losses, and Ties, with 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. But now when I see standings there's a 4th column that I have no idea what it is and now I understand that you can still earn a point from a loss as long as it's in overtime? Can someone explain the points system to me?

You get a normal win if you win in overtime. You get 1 point justs for getting into overtime. Something like that.

Personally, I don't even think they should have ties. They should skate until they drop. Or have penalty shots or something. I've never been a fan of ties in sports. Though my beloved soccer does have ties. But I wish they wouldn't.

OK, IIRC.
Win (score more points than the other team)- 2 points.
Loss (score fewer points than the other team in the 3 periods of regulation)- 0 points.
Tie (neither team has more points than the other after regulation and the overtime period)- 1 point.
Overtime loss- 1 point.

So the standings columns are Win|Loss|Tie|Overtime Loss?

Yep, the way it really works is if the two teams are tied at the end of regulation both teams get a point. If a team wins in OT they get an additional point. If a team pulls their goalie in OT for any reason other than a delayed penalty and a goal is scored they lose their point for a regulation tie. Confused now?
