So what do you want? Do you want him back? This could get you all Favoured or even Chosen status. It would probably also meaning going on an epic quest to find a cure for the dying god. Or do you want to be gods yourselves? In that case you "just" have to finish him off. I don't know how much power he has left, but this would probably mean epic challenge. After that, you have to decide who'll be the most suited candidate. This ascendancy candidate than might have to find a way to usurp that power - don't expect Ao to just wink you on in. There might be artifacts to be found, quests to be taken to show your worth (probably psi related), or a divine sponsor to be petitioned (which might also include tests). That sponsor might be Gond who tasks you to bring back special materials so he can build a machine that drains the divine power from the dead god and infuses you with it. Gond might do it for the excuse to build said machine, but he won't be a suitable overlord after, as he doesn't give a damn about psionics - they're not techy. It might be Oghma tasking you to find the Words that will make you God of the Hidden Art (much like truenames, those words would be unique to the situation: Character X attempting to take Portfolio Y from Dead Deity Z). Oghma would fit thematically as both knowledge and psi are things of the mind. It might be Mystra, who hopes to gain indirect control over the Hidden Art, so it won't fall into the wrong hands, like Talos or Cyric.
