She carries a magical basket that dispenses eggs with various magical properties. The Herald of Spring takes physical form but one day each year—on the spring equinox. She is a unique manifestation of the essence of rebirth and renewed fertility. Her relation to the fertility of spring after the long sleep of winter is demonstrated by her taking physical form as an animal well known for its fecundity, as well as her penchant for distributing magical eggs (another symbol of fertility and birth). It is the sole purpose of the Herald of Spring to awaken the land to the joys of spring. Wherever she goes, the land blooms and leaves behind the white shroud of winter. Over the years she has developed the habit of bringing gifts to children. The Herald of Spring tends to leave sweets and other edible goods, and generally includes one or two magical eggs for children who have been especially good. If slain, the spiritual essence that is the Herald of Spring dissipates into the earth and returns in full force the following spring—there is no way to truly kill this creature. Should the mortal form of the Herald of Spring be destroyed before her mission is complete, dire consequences result. The region suffers from drought or blight, and does not produce crops that year. The fertility of the land remains dormant until the next year when the Herald of Spring awakens once more. Combat The Herald of Spring does not initiate combat even with evil creatures, for using her formidable powers to kill counteracts her mission to spread goodwill and the rebirth of spring. She defends herself if need be, but seeks to flee from combat at the first opportunity. Nature’s Advocate (Su): The Herald of Spring can speak with plants and speak with animals at will as a free action. This ability cannot be negated or dispelled. As a powerful advocate of nature, the Herald of Spring can detect any alignment. Rebirth (Su): Once per year, the Herald of Spring can cast reincarnation on any single creature that died within the previous year. This is very draining for her, and weakens her ability to bring spring to the world; therefore she is very hesitant to use this ability except in the most desperate of circumstances. Use of this ability denies the Herald of Spring any further use of her Spring supernatural ability. Spring (Su): Once the Herald of Spring fully manifests, spring has arrived; this has no in-game effect other than to bring fertility back to the world. However, as a side effect of her ability to induce springtime, any plant or plant creature automatically gains fast healing (5) for as long as they are within 100 feet of the Herald of Spring; dead plants are returned to life, flowers bloom, and any diseased or otherwise blighted plants are restored. The Herald of Spring can break any magically induced disease or blight on plants by succeeding on a Charisma check against the DC of the spell that caused the blight. Spells (Su): The Herald of Spring has the spell capability of a 10th level druid. Her divine spells per day are: 0— 6; 1st— 5; 2nd— 5; 3rd— 4; 4th— 4; 5th— 3. Skills: Thanks to the rabbit-like form she takes, the Herald of Spring has a +8 racial bonus to Jump checks, and a +4 racial bonus to Listen checks. She also has a +20 racial bonus to Knowledge (nature) and Survival checks. Magical Eggs The magical eggs of the Herald of Spring have a variety of effects, depending on the spells used in their creation. The eggs are about the size of a normal chicken egg, and are brightly colored and decorated. Only the Herald of Spring knows how to create such eggs, and she does not share this knowledge with anyone. Listed below are only a few of the different types of eggs the Herald of Spring has been known to make. Feast Egg: This egg, when consumed, sustains a Medium creature for 1 week without food or water. Gem Egg: This magical egg, when broken open, spills forth 2d20 gems of varying quality. Healing Egg: The contents of this egg have the effect of a cure critical wounds spell if consumed. Luck Egg: This egg is the equivalent of a luckstone.
