I want my Relic!

I was perusing the MIC, and I found a pair of Gauntlets. They're PERFECT for my character. The relic power's kinda powerful, but they have prereqs for unlocking the relic power and they just make sense for my character's flavor.

Problem is . . . how does one get one's DM to allow an item to be found without dropping the items name out of character?

Highlight it in his sourcebook?
Subliminal messages?
Bribing?
Any suggestions?

P.S. Chris, if you're reading this . . . well, I guess I'm screwed. :\

Id probably just discuss it with my DM. As long as it doesnt break the game you should be okay. Really I see it as being the same as a rogue looking for gloves of dex or a wizard that wants a boccobs blessed book.

What's wrong with discussing it out of character? I agree with IamTheTest. If the item is too powerful, you shouldn't be bringing it up anyway, and if it isn't and the DM might think it makes a nice addition to the game, talking to him as a player might be all that's needed. Clear communication between DMs and players is always a good thing, IMNSHO.

If you wanted to role play out the fact that you are searching for some extra-special magic item, and describe what you are looking for, I'm pretty sure the DM might get the hint.

Or you could just talk to him, if you want to take the easy route.

Give your DM a copy of the MIC, which just happens to have that item circled in highlighter marker, surrounded by gold stars and pink hearts?

Add a box of his favorite beer. Works since years.

WTF? My players aren't allowed to look at the DMG, MIC, or any other book that has a large percentage of DM content, and you want a *relic*? Are you playing at Epic levels? Otherwise, I'd ixnay the elicray if I were your DM.

Different strokes. Never assume everyone does - or should - play the same way as you. For example, I'm completely comfortable with players reading the DMG or MIC and have often suggested that they check out something or the other, and would be highly amused if a DM told me that I couldn't read the DMG (since I DM, I have it almost memorized).

And if a player told me he wants a relic, I'd think about it and see if it fits in with the game or not and make a decision. The party's current level would be a factor in the decision, but only a partial one. Low level parties carrying an artifact or a relic can lead to a lot of fun situations.
