The priest isn't an old guy. In fact he's quite young. Probably one of the lower ranking priests from the temple left behind to finish decorating and preparing before the remains of the procession arrive. He listens to your story and you clean your armour and tend to your wounds. "Well, I was expecting a huge procession and with just the two of us around, there's no way I could have known. Everyone was down at the gate to meet the procession!" He starts pacing, "This doesn't bode well for Meldin. He was going to relight the flames but if the dead have risen. Yes, maybe you can help him!" He goes to a golden case behind the altar and opens it. Inside he brings out two sticks carved with runes. These are the striking stones. Strike them near the sacred braziers and it will relight them. There are seven in all and each is keyed to a rune on the beacon. When all seven are lit, the beacon will light also. "I'll stay here with these two" He indicates the girl, Newt and the Merchant whose name is Olsen. "I'm not fighter. I also want to be here if more people from town come seeking shelter. It seems the temple is protected from whatever force is doing this." He hands you the sticks. "Sometimes it takes a bit of striking to get the flames lit. But, you can also pray to Pelor and pour some life force into them to light the flames that way1" "Oh, and the dead are harmed by the light of the flame when it is lit. They are also weakened when in the light. That was the whole point of the beacon - to be a safeguard against the dead."
You all level up to level 3 and can have a short rest. To use the sticks you must use your full action every round for 1d3+1 rounds to light the brazier. If you don't want to wait and want to do it immediately, you can expend one Hit Dice.
