Lorenn was having fun catching the eye of one of the standing warriors, and then looking away. It was a harmless game, but it kept him amused while others battled it out over words. Kalorn was sizing up the large warrior known as Orcaheart. He appeared very skilled and competent, and held a bone-frame and waxed-skin shield in front of his knees in a way that looked like he knew very well how to use it. Alhana was also distracted from the negotiation. One of the standing guards kept nervously fiddling with his weapon, a long curved blade made of bone. She was calculating how many arrows she could put in him before he reached Mord, should that be his intent. Mord, for his part, found this negotiation frustrating. The chief and his council were hard to read and he understood nothing of their language. He could tell that Loklafd was trying his best to be diplomatic, but was having some trouble with even the very basic thrust of their request. After a long back-and-forth, Loklafd shook his head and turned to Mord, saying, "Chief Barking Seal insists that they have not seen Maccath the Crimson; that the ship we saw is not hers but a long-forgotten wreck; and that there is no dragon here. They offer us a meal, and a place to stay for the night, but they expect us to leave early in the morning." Sesto listened and he knew that the chief was lying. In fact, he knew why he lied: He was protecting his people from the wrath of the dragon. He hid it well, presenting the confidence of a chief and the laid-back attitude of a man without care. He laughed at his own jokes, making the barking sound that gave him his name. But he was afraid, and Sesto knew it.
