Shalendra awoke, her face wan and lined with fatigue. She spat blood and slowly sat up, making sure not to make any threatening gestures as Vairar watched her closely. They were not friends, exactly, but she had known Vairar for some time, and they had a mutual respect. She threw off her shield (which had been strapped to her arm) and cradled her knees. Finally, she said softly, "I am a fool. I have made terrible choices. I do not ask your forgiveness, I do not deserve it." She said the last while looking at the ground, but she was speaking to her brother. When she looked up to see what he might say, she realized that his back was to her, bound in the Iron Bands. "Uvolnit." she said flatly and the bands twisted and released Sir Darfin. They wound themselves into a fist-sized ball and flew toward her. The ball of bands would have been easy to catch, but she let it hit the floor where it landed with a pang and then rolled to where Tommi could easily grab it. Darfin turned to his sister, angry at first, but he softened when he saw how defeated she looked. He had known her her whole life; three hundred years; and he had never seen her look so utterly crushed. "If you wish to bind me with it," she told Tommi, "Say 'svazat' and throw."
