Hi All, I'm about to kick off a new campaign. We'll have 4 PCs, all 3rd level. The intro to the campaign I sent them basically set up the current situation to be thus: The town they are in (Helkris) is a colony of an empire called Otalas on the northern frontiers of the empire. Lately tensions have been growing between the Otalans and the locals because a new governor has taken control of the local garrison and is running things with a bit of a heavy hand. Rumor has it that plague and war are sweeping across the plains beyond the mountains to the west and refugees are beginning to enter the area. A hard winter had closed the passes but the spring thaw has arrived and by now barges should have come down the river from the mountain villages laiden with furs, timber and other goods to be traded for much needed supplies after the hard winter. No barges and no word from the villages has come. The PCs are going to begin their lives working for a man named Hadlin who is a member of some secret order that is engaged in a shadow war with some other order. The PCs no little about either, but they know their patron is involved in a dangerous business and is a powerful man. At the start of the first adventure, Hadlin will summon the PCs and ask them to go find out why no barges have come from the villages. He will instruct them to visit "an associate" who is actually a double agent, working against Hadlin's order and will be up to some sort of mischief. I want the first adventure to be a run-of-the-mill monster hunt...I thought a Barghest or greater barghest would be cool. Maybe it has taken up residence between the villages and the main town, thus preventing caravans from making it down the river. However, I want it to be more than just a monster hunt, of course. The Barghest has a reason for being there. Maybe it is directly or indirectly associated with Hadlin's "associate". Maybe it is part of some other sinister plan. I don't know. I need a little help filling in the details. Also, are there any pitfalls associated with one of these. I see it has DR (10/+1 or something like that). I hope none (or very few) of the PCs by a +1 weapon...that will complicate their lives. I want this monster hunt to be more of a mystery (sort of like Brotherhood of the Wolf)...the monster must be overcome by getting at its master, not by just defeating it head on... Suggestions? Thanks!
