If Paizo were to publish 4e products, I wouldn't care. If Paizo were to take Pathfinder APs, Golarion, or Pathfinder/Gamemastery modules 4e, I'd stop buying from them. But my real answser is more complicated than that though. I was not a Dragon or Dungeon subscriber but when I picked up the occasional issue, Paizo's stuff was top notch. My opinion of WotC's products was neutral, some I like, some I disliked. Most (by-far) of my gaming $ went to 3rd-party publishers (as it does today). After the WotC license-pullback debacle (reasons notwithstanding, it was handled poorly), I came to have a tremendous respect for Paizo. They were dealt a hand of proverbial crap. It could have been a death knell for them. Instead, they decided to reinvent themselves by releasing a new RPG world with a host of products set in that world. I read the teasers for Golarion and Pathfinder APs and loved what I read. I preordered a Pathfinder AP subscription. They walked the wire of frustration vs. ring-kissing as they waited for the 4e rules and details of the new OGL. They were hounded to commit to 4e sight-unseen on their own boards by customers threatening to leave them if they didn't switch and always replied with professionalism, courtesy, and respect. Over the course of that year, I compared the official responses coming out of Paizo to those coming out of WotC. While I'm sure wonderful people work at both companies, it became clearer with each release which one was better at trying to satisfy their customers while treating them with respect. I fully expected to hear that Pathfinder and Golarion would go 4e. Thankfully, WotC fumbled that ball as well and the combination of OGL delay, eventual OGL-death, and the release of the restrictive GSL resulted in Golarion staying 3.x. The announcement of a Pathfinder RPG was more than I could have hoped for. So I'm happy where things ended up. Sure, if the GSL is sufficiently revised, it might alter Paizo's course somewhat, but I think the Pathfinder RPG is past the point of no return and will be the flagship product (THANK GOD!). If 4e is successful for WotC, good for them. But ultimately, what I want is for Paizo, Green Ronin, Mongoose, and my other favorite RPG publishers be able to publish, compete, and thrive without having their existence tied to the existence of a WotC license or edition. If WotC remains the 800-lb gorilla because they make the best products - kudos to them. However, I don't ever want to see WotC derail a company the way they almost did Paizo. PS: I understand WotC's business reasons for doing so, that they had the right to do so, and from a competitive standpoint may have been smart to try and do so. I still don't like the way it went down.
