If you had to recommend one Mutants and Masterminds supplement...

I ask because I just placed an order with amazon and was wondering which supp would be best at fleshing the entire experience out. Freedom City seems to be out of stock everywhere, so that's a no go.

So what do you consider the essential M+M accessory and why?

I was just about to say "Freedom City." It's a thing of beauty.

Next on my list would have to be Crooks!

I was pretty impressed with Crooks. The artwork is amazing. I also liked the fact that each villain had a few adventure hooks as well. It's not as good as Freedom City, but than again, most products (of any genre) aren't either. Crooks is better than most though and definitely money well spent.

Try looking for Freedom City on ebay although I had to get mine at a LGS.

For print products I'd say either Freedom City or Crooks! since both are pretty equal in my mind. If you want a good city setting with lots of cool extras, then Freedom City is for you. If you don't really want a setting, but need lots of great villains for light-hearted to gritty games, then Crooks! is a must buy. IMO, I'd get both.

For PDF products, LPJ Designs puts out some great templates and archetypes that can help newbies make the character that they want without having to pour over all the powers and feats. There is also one called Power Corrupted that expands the power base. Some of the powers are unbalanced, but it's nothing that a little houseruling can't fix.

Hope that helps,
Kane

Freedom City #1 with a BULLET!

Even if you don't plan to use it as a setting for your game, it is a valuable resource for seeing how to integrate superheroes into a modern setting. Heck, even if you don't use it for M&M, you could use it for a different modern game - just remove the supers and away you go!

D00d I dont even use the M&M system rules and I own Freedom City, Crooks, M&M Annual #1 and Foes of Freedom. The best of these hands down is Freedom City, followed closely by Crooks. Even though I don't use the system I just convert the characters / NPC's over to HERO System. Theyre that good , especially Freedom City.
